What type of compond miter saw?
Is there a brand/ model of compound miter saw I should get?
Are there specific features that are necessary or a waste of money?
I don’t have a lot of money or space.
I enjoy wood working, especially cabinet / table building.
Currently, I only use hand-held power tools. I would like to upgrade to a miter saw. Any suggestions?
The right tool for the right job. The first thing you need to decide is what are you going to be using it for and how often are you going to be using it.
The average hobbyist does not need one with the quality and size that a professional carpenter would require (like me).
Do you need a 8″ 10″ or 12″ blade? A 10″ would work for most applications. I cut crown molding so that is one reason I have a 12″ double compound saw.
Do you need it to make cuts in all four directions off of 90 degrees (two bevel directions and two angle directions) or would one bevel and both angles be sufficient would recommend a single bevel with a 50 degree angle cut in both directions.
Do you need a sliding compound saw or just a chop saw type. Most of the time a chop saw will meet your needs, it depends on the size of the lumber you intend to cut.
The more features you get the more money it will cost. Think long term though so you don’t buy a real cheap model and regret it later. You might consider an “off” brand because of the price. A hobbyist will not be subject their saw to the same use and abuse that a saw that is used on a very regular basis is subjected to. Harbor Freight is a store that comes to mind.
Also watch the sales I bought my Rigid brand 12″ double bevel 65 degree two direction sliding saw with a laser for $400.00 on sale
