Creating mosaics: Is this a good base of hardboard tiles?
Conglomerate is a good base for your tile, if the size is limited global mosaic, limit the size of the tiles, and not show the mosaic in a wet environment. panel avoided for outdoor applications because of the risk of deterioration. Assuming the chips are the size of a quarter or less and the total size of your mosaic is less than 24 "x24", I found that the 1/8-inch thick panel provides a sound basis. If the chips are small, it is surprising how many pieces are flexible, even with the mortar, which means it can withstand some deformation before the cracks with mortar or pieces of glass slipping. If the chips are large or if incorporated into large pieces of colored glass in the mosaic, the thickness of your base should be larger than tables can not support a lot of tension (ie, the thickness of the wood, the more resistant strain). For example, suppose that the mosaic is 24 "x24" and is used a piece of yellow glass to represent the sun which illuminates the world. Assume that the Sun's diameter is 10 inches, which is a big part of the mosaic. It is easy to see how a bit of deformation can be noted that a piece of glass and failure (ie, skip the break). It's like ceramic tiles on a concrete slab foundation. As the concrete cracks and movements, the tension is applied to the ceramic and if the stress is large enough, reaching the charts. Therefore, you should the size tiles in the choice of base thickness of your tile.
During the years making mosaic murals are many 24 "x 24" or less I found that my foundation is preferred 1/8-inch hardboard. Is the substance of that color pegboard is made of dark brown, but no holes. It is slippery smooth on one side and rough on the other. I can use this material only for dry skin, mosaic murals inside, not exposed to moisture. I can using this material because: 1) relatively thin, 2) relatively light, and 3) rough side so that the glue takes hold of the property.
The 1/8-inch thick finite allows the tile to fit in a standard pre-made. My glass tiles are about 1/8-inch thick, so the total thickness is just finishing 1/4-inch mosaic. This allows me buy a frame and ready for almost anything. I plan my interior wall tiles 16 "x24" 18 "x 24" or 24 "x24", which are the sizes common pre-made frames. If I had to use 3/4-inch plywood or MDF as a base, then use a custom frame, to a depth sufficient to cover all the thickness of the tile (ie wood base, 1/8-inch 3/4-inch tesserae more nearly equal to a thickness of 1 inch). custom tables cost up to five times more than standard pre-made frames. For example, taking advantage of their two weeks of sales from 50% to my favorite hardware store, you can get a pre-made paper 18 "x24" frame style and a nice color that best suits the mosaic tiles were installed in the frame, the son suspended installed, and supports installed all for under $ 25. It true! Less than $ 25. A framework to measure could cost up to $ 150.
Not only save on the cost of training, the panel is inexpensive compared to 3/4-inch wood and MDF. I can buy before cutting a section of the fiber, instead of full 4'x'8 sheet. The pre-cut section 24 "x48". Knowing the height my interior wall tile is usually 24 "(which is the width of the section pre-cut), which allows me to cut the panel to give me a 16", 18 "or 24" My foundation Moses wide. For example, suppose I want my mosaic 18 "x24". Panel width buying pre-cut is 24. "Mido and cutting 18 ", which means that a fiber 18" x24 ". The piece fits perfectly into a standard 18" x24 "pre-made framework. I measure and cut the panel with a standard circular saw and tear "fence" to a panel that holds the Level 3 meters long with two clamps. The fence allows me to push the saw along the level straight line to ensure straight and accurate cut.
I prepare the panel of the foundation for the painting with two coats of white primer. The main reason white paint is to get a white background in which the glass tiles met (Note: I always respect the glass to the rough side of masonite) .. Although generally use of opaque white glass background to help clarify the brown color of the panel makes the pieces of glass appears opaque and dark, even if the glass is supposed to be opaque. The secondary benefit of hardboard painting with primer is that the seals. I do not know if the sealing panel does nothing, but it makes me feel better to believe that it is sealed. I do not know material properties or chemical fiber panels and how it is made, so I do not know whether to be closed, but the picture gives me a great feeling of warmth and logic diffuse. Seal usually all you need to or not.
After applying tiles and grout, you will be amazed by the flexibility of glass mosaic is a failure unfair or grout (assuming that the chips are relatively low). first time you use the 1/8-inch panel as the basis for a mosaic, felt and found I could bend mosaic or two inches, without affecting the glass and grout. I was too afraid to bend over two inches! After the experiment, I suppose, if the tile can be subjected to enormous two inches, then you can survive any distortion that might occur. Then, after the mosaic has been installed as part of pre-made, I realized that mosaic has been installed to prevent any distortion at all. The mosaic was pressed and held in place with little ties on the back of the frame to avoid falling. The only way you can warp tile is that if strong enough to cause the structure to deform with it. I've never had a problem with the wall tiles distortion within the use of 1/8-inch hardboard set in a standard pre-made chassis.
1/8-inch panel is also quite small the weight of the entire mosaic is not so heavy that you convert your home to create a support structure large enough to support the weight of a mosaic. In general, my 24 "x24" (Or less) tiles are light enough to hang a picture hook and nail and drywall installed. I have no cutting drywall to install 2 "x 4 "piece between the posts and then replace the drywall. This is very advantageous, especially when selling or giving Mosaic (for example, you will not lose customers you can lose if you tell them you have to hang the pictures to do more to hammer a nail into the wall).
