Can I charge NiMH batteries in a portable radio that was designed to charge nickel-cadmium batteries?

There are about 15 years, pro340xl bought a Uniden handheld CB radio. This was before the advent of NiMH AA batteries. Radio has been designed with a charging port so you can load the AA batteries nickel-cadmium batteries in about 12 hours. my question is: can we use the radio to charge AA NiMH batteries or will cause problems Learn how to explode or catch fire?
