Demolition Breaker
Electrical Question: Replacing Box and Breakers.?

The panel box and breakers for my garage are Federal Pacific Stab-Lok. I see a number of articles stating these are hazardous and prone to failure. I need an experts honest opinion of whether I need to replace the setup and an approx. cost. The box is exposed so there would not be any demolition needed. Any help is appreciated.
I will have 200 amp service coming in. 125 amp main with a 15A,(2) 20A, and (2) 30A circuits. I was looking at upgrading one of the 30′s to a 50 for heat and have come across the reviews and frankly started worrying. I do not want a fire.

I’m a licensed electrician in Michigan but I’ll admit I’ve never used Federal Pacific but have heard of the problems with that brand. Personally I have seen GE breakers overheat and burned on the sides of the breaker and that is some of the problems Federal Pacific was having. I think there was a recall in Canada but not in the U.S.
I have used Square D, both the QO type & Homeline and also Siemen, Cutler Hammer & Eaton; they are good products.
What size service is in your garage? For a 100amp panel (includes the 100a main breaker) with 20 spaces for breakers expect up to around $100 depending how many breakers you need. Homeline single pole breakers are around $7.50 compared to SqD Type QO which are around $15 each.
Anyways shop around a bit and also these are available at Home Depot & Lowes as well as many local electrical supply companies in your area.
