physical explanation for breaking a glass bottle of water 100% vs 100% air?

I saw a video of Julius Sumner Miller (Pascal) and had a short demo in which he explained that a glass bottle filled with water, completely out of air, could also provide much resistance Solid as a hammer, but an air bubble prevents it. Then I did an experiment in which I dropped a brick in a glass bottle (without air), then an empty box, both covered and sealed. The void is filled, as he had not. I understand it works this way because the water can not be compressed, but beyond that, do not really understand the physics in this or how it relates to the principle of Pascal and the pressure in particular. Does anyone know how to explain? Thanks!

Pascal's principle is that force and pressure transfer fluids. A full bottle of water makes the transfer of force through the bottle and the other end, like a hammer. If there is a air bubble, compressed air and the bottle is talk due to structural weakness.
