How do you separate soldered copper pipe?
I have some copper pipe in my sprinkler system that is soldered together. I need to get it apart so I can replace the backflow preventer which was freeze damaged last winter. Do I just heat the pipe and will it come apart? Can I just slide it back together when I have replaced the broken part? I’m no plumber, so any detailed help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dale
Yes you can heat it up, and it will slide apart easily. Cut the pipe with a tubing cutter, hold the pipe with a wrench, then heat the fitting until you can turn it and pull it out. It will only take a couple of minutes of heat. Just make sure when you sweat the pipe back together, to sand all the surfaced that are going to be soldered, and use flux. Put flux on the surfaces that are to be soldered and insert the pipe to be soldered. Apply heat to the fitting. Touch the area to be soldered with the solder until it melts easily and go around the pipe. The solder will be drawn in because of the flux. Check that you have gotten solder all around the pipe, then take a dry rag and wipe away any excess. Then take a wet rag or some water and cool it off.
