I’m thinking of buying a house made of stucco. Is that the same as concrete?

And the house was built in 1922 but it looks very solid. Much more solid even than most new brick houses made today. Is this house probably outdated and I shouldn’t mess with it or does the material last much longer?

Stucco is a form of concrete, but the construction is totally different from a true concrete house. A stucco house is built with conventional wood framing and sheathing, with a layer of tarpaper, followed by a layer of chickenwire which will hold the stucco mixture in place. Stucco is good at hiding rot or termite damage in the underlying frame, so a careful pre-purchase inspection is essential. Absent such damage, it could be a good buy. But for a house built in 1922, the mechanical systems will require careful scrutiny; the most likely deficient system will be electrical, with the house having a 60 amp fuse panel: today, 200 amp breaker panels are considered the minimum. Heat, plumbing, and roof will also require careful examination.
