Functionality is more important than design, but as you say yourself, it can be hard to develop functionality without having a design in mind.. . What I usually do when designing a site is do up a mock-up of what I want the site to look like, in Photoshop. I keep it simple and basic at first, something I know I can do easily without spending a lot of time on the design. Then I get to work on the functionality while working towards this simple design. Once the functionality is implemented and working on this simple design, I might decide to spruce up the design a bit. The design should only start to get more complicated once the functionality is in place, otherwise it’s easy to spend too much time on the design and end up with half-finished functionality.. . Doing a mock-up design gives you a direction to go in, and if you start to get lost, it gives you something to refer back to. So I’d definitely recommend giving this method a shot.
